JIM MALONE 1
JIM MALONE

Jim Malone, born in Sheffield in 1946, was part of an exciting generation of potters and ceramists who graduated from Camberwell in the 1970s and found new expression with clay. Malone, though on the face of it a traditionalist, was no exception as he explored afresh a range of naturally sourced clays, glazes and slips that added something new to a functional approach essentially derived from English medieval, early Chinese and Korean exemplars, but which in his hands had its own quiet twentieth century confidence.

Living and working in remote parts of Britain, first in north Wales and now in Cumbria, Malone's best pots have achieved a rare synthesis of relaxed form and deep glazing, perhaps enlivened by free spirited engraving and brushwork, particularly strong on his bowl, bottle and jug shapes, but also evident in his satisfying domestic ware pieces. At their strongest when most personal, the pots can have a lyrical quality, integrated and gently searching.
