JOHN BEDDING

York Colletion ref: YORAG_SHAW_700

John Bedding (born 1947) trained at the Leach Pottery in St Ives in the late 1960s, and joined the staff shortly after. In 1978 he went to Japan to work with Shigeyoshi Ichino, setting up a workshop back in Cornwall in 1980. He is now based in St Ives, where he has produced work very varied in style within a loosely 'anglo-oriental' idiom. This has ranged from direct and freely made celadon porcelain to the precision of his lustre-enriched raku. His most opulent work is still a clear acknowledgement of his Japanese sources, the pots essentially a canvas for his often complex and technically assured decoration.

Bedding is now back in the Leach workshop as Honorary Lead Potter at the Leach Pottery Studio and Museum, so coming full circle in a creative journey of some fifty years.
